The Justiciar Sarantian, a holy warrior of the Order of the Jade Sepulchre, is tracking down a fugitive arcanist when he becomes reluctantly drawn into investigating a case of demonic possession of a village blacksmith.

Initially dismissive, Sarantian is pressured by the local bishop, Theodric, to exorcise the entity, revealing rumours which result in a perilous journey to a mausoleum to confront the malevolent spirit, but in the crumbling catacombs, Sevarian discovers that the problem is not what it seems.
