The Justiciar Sevarian, a holy warrior of the Order of the Jade Sepulchre, is tracking down a fugitive arcanist when he becomes reluctantly drawn into investigating a seeming case of demonic possession of a village blacksmith. Initially dismissive, Sevarian is pressured by the local bishop, Theodric, to exorcise the entity, but his attempts fail, revealing no demonic presence. Theodric's steward, Deoran, offers a possible explanation for the mystery, revealing rumours which result in a perilous journey to a mausoleum to confront the malevolent spirit, but in the crumbling catacombs, Sevarian discovers that nothing is what it seems.
